Bowen sets the stage for a new source of ruin
Everyone in Australia should IMO watch the Whitehouse effect because it is a solid documentation of how the discussion of both AGW ( anthropomorphic global warming ) particularly ( as doco material largely ends over 20 years ago) and CC ( climate change ) developed.
It hasn't changed my view that CO2 was and still is wrongly implicated in a disaster scenario. Symbolically this story on AGW ends where that story failed in
the late 90's and CC took over .
The biggest problem about the political ship of panic about CO2 is that its changed hulls ( from AGW to CC) and is therefore likely to sink on intellectual competency grounds alone ( forget where the oil lobby is -- to easy to blame them and simple Marxism (mix of projection ,envy and idealism etc ?) is still our enemy .
Unless public debate goes back to basics ( how to get energy) the confusion that this doco so well establishes, will remain .
Typically, when a serious problem like fuel costs and oil availability arises , no political ( UN media ,party ) can be trusted to proactively address it.
The mad post Christian mood that we can eliminate greed and play god with the atmosphere has most definitely added to the confusion and distractions ( like C02) . God help us if any of us think the UN has the answers .
What the doco makes even more concrete for me is that
1. the abuse of fossil fuels remains a threat but
2. the political sides that have developed around it are not stable and never have been
3 the confusion in the USA over 20 years ago , so well shown in the more open discussions in the USA , failed to resolve the focus and the ways forward leading to Bush's hesitation around 1992 when Rio happened
4 The UN as can be reasonably be expected of an organization which is so heavenly minded it thinks it can state solutions to world problems when its main members don't solve their own , only reinforced resistance in the USA as a whole to any action commitments at Rio in June.
5 The USA's reaction to what amounted to bullying tactics was predictable normal and quite reasonable. Doesn't mean we should ignore real truths .
6 Schnieder and Reilly ( the influential scientists rightly featured on reflection at the end ) were most interesting as they were recorded well and reflect the limited capacity of any scientist to deal with all the issues involved
A lot of that huge angst was ours too but we Aussies , like the people of the free world , did not see fully just HOW the discussion targets changed . We live on an island and are fed by the ABC ( a bunch of idealists - not scientists ) .
The doco is very useful list of changing worries from heat m drought to ice melts, storms and sea level rise .
Jane ( below ) has IMO nailed the end of the AGW era to Gores smart arsing and that films and the ABC's preoccupation with the J curve ,before 2000
The next doco( 2000-25) needs to focus on what truths have come forward since that time that add to the need to plan for the future ...and not panic the people through the game of politics.
As Bush rightly said " Its the eco stupid " that matters and a lot of good work by Vaclav recently on that ( How the world works) ,
CC is a messy watery hole ( like the gold prize badge of Net Zero) that i don't think has much chance of surviving. AGW has more testability IMO http://quickfiz.blogspot.com
I do like Schneiders sound summary that the needed change will not come quickly, but will be generational. We don't know how realistic that will be either .
BUT
Young people, unlike us oldies, are leading the way in reducing pressure on the environment ( this is the realists end game here !!!) ( non caged eggs, local milk) smaller houses and cars .
But let no one think we are near Nirvana . The better world is worlds away and greed and deception ( incl self deception) are here with us to stay .

Fatcheck
Why stats and facts won't improve health care for example.
Managers don't know staff or trust them and any out like the monitoring out is easy for such characters- in a more completely respeonsible structure such lost people would drop out .With cyicsism and a ne job to do they have work to do.
Pity it breeds cynicism and abandonment to cynicism . That wouldn't worry Insiders and Innocents

Giving freedom and avoiding Cliffs is productivity modelling
Sach and Ross Gittins are in the news this week
(SydneyMH) talking about big picture economic policy . About time I say ; Many economists haven't really factored scarcity and regeneration elements into their plain 2 dimensional ledger sheet modelling. That doesn't help our leaders who really need a good lead here !
The real world is more than supply and demand control but you wouldn't know that listening to the desperate and careless talk of leaders and the majority of the audience at the moment .The Free marketeers need a good kick where it hurts !( I am talking about their simple mind games mostly)? Sound big picture economists and practical ecologists have always started with a conversation about elasticity .Bigger picture discussions must move from plain elasticity to resilience assessment.

Red tape and relying on the unreliable
As the coal stuff shows, if you have a got a big budget ,even the biggest media campaign can't win against a pile of sacred PAPER which only the rich proponents can understand .And it doesn't stop there . Every sentence is grist for the lawyers mill so that the productivity of the process is clearly the lowest in the OECD . Low point too in the liberal mind of 2012.
The only way Canberra and the party can help is to stop the snowing . Their own operatives used to be able to resist the snowing by setting the brief and limiting the bull . Now the huge bureaus just gets swamped by it .Radical thinking BEFORE falling for radical surgery.

Our societies failure to invest in the capital and run on the cash is the truth - terrible for us that we don't want to hear it .
Hope some young people in the audience will recognize a genuine bloke who has faithfully sought alone to represent the minority view.
Silly old fabians can't even see why they are becoming increasingly irrelevant , they talk big about big interests but follow, as Bob said tonight , the conservatives down the sycophants road to market driven exploitation and nirvana (depending on which silly extreme nonsense chair you sit on )
if you live on the earth , not just talk about the earth , you learn these things and you build, not end up with egg or some now well dated old reactionaries tune on your lips /face.

Nothing will change in the West till the West takes Weber seriously
This weeks WEF ( World Economic Forum ) be just another waster of time unless there is a bit more diversity in the discussion about who drives what when and where. If we ecologists did business like most wannabes do business we wouldn't have one to run .
Woosy governnments are partly a product of their own stupidity - created as they often now are - in the image of the market.
One hopes the hit to the fanatasy of faith in real estate values will shake them
